Roswell International Sci-Fi Film Festival and Digital Shoot-Out

ATTENTION ALL FILMMAKERS AND SCREENWRITERS!!

Famous Monsters is proud to present the second annual Roswell International Sci-Fi Film Festival and Digital Shoot-Out. I know, long name. But that's because we offer SO much. First of all, the film festival is held in Roswell, NM, home to one of history's most famous UFO encounters (or "weather balloon" for our skeptics out there). The festival is looking for all of our independent and at-home filmmakers to send us their short and feature length Sci-Fi, fantasy, supernatural, and suspense films. FM had such a tremendous time with RISF last year that we decided to be part of its inner workings this year. Besides, what better way to honor Mr. Sci-Fi than with a film festival taking place on what is akin to hallowed ground for science fiction buffs.

But wait, that's not the best part. . .

The final part of RISF is the Shoot-Out. Enter our short screenplay competition (12 pages of less) and yours may be one of five scripts selected to be made into film. It works like this: If your script is selected, you'll come to Roswell, NM where you'll have one week to shoot and edit your film before it debuts in a special ceremony at the festival. RISF is one of the rare festivals where you can enter with a few pages and leave with a full film.

Deadline for entry is May 19th. Head on over to the Roswell site and check out all the details. We look forward to seeing you monsterpieces!

And, of course, a contest. This issue we're giving away copies of Titan Books' COMPANY OF THE DEAD, because, once you read the review and excerpt you'll definitely want one of your own! All this and so much more in Issue #4 of THE GRAVEYARD EXAMINER!

Why Sponsor Independent Filmmakers of the Inland Empire?

I was asked to speak about our group and a little about what we do to promote the group and our sponsors.

    Here was my response:

A little more about our group.  We are now at over 380 registered members.  Our membership is made up of filmmakers and filmmaking enthusiasts of all levels.  We average 50 members to our monthly meetings.

We are located in the Inland Empire and our meetings are being held currently at Claremont's Pitzer College, about an hour east of Burbank.

We pattern the meetings after the successful LAFCPUG and LAPPG meetings.

As media partners with the following organizations and events: Photocine Expo, Createasphere, FCPUG Network SuperMeet and DV Expo we have been prominently featured in their publications, web sites and handouts.

You can see us listed on the following pages:

As a featured blogger for InlandSoCal.com/iGuide and NAB, I have had articles featured on their pages, bringing attention to our group.

When possible, we live stream our meetings.

We have been featured in at least four news video pieces, that I am aware of: IndieSpot.tv (Internet), InlandSoCal (TV), Inland Valley Magazine (TV) and NewsNet Morning News (TV).  I've also been on the Making Film podcast and the Digital Production Buzz.

We are an Official Adobe User Group, Avid User Group, Apple User Group, Focal Press User Group, Peachpit User Group, O'Reilly User Group and a Sony Vegas User Group.

We continue to promote our meetings and sponsors' messages through: Craigslist, Meetup, Adobe Groups, Twitter, Posterous, MySpace and Facebook, where we have a community of other groups and friends that help spread the word as well.  These other groups include such greats as: DMALA (Motion Graphics group and Digital Media Artists in Hollywood, CA), LAFCPUG (Los Angeles Final Cut Pro User Group), South Bay Filmmakers, Filmmakers Alliance and LAPPG (Los Angeles Post Production Group).  Our flyers are at many of these groups' events as well.

We, ourselves, sponsor the 48 Hour Film Project Inland Empire and 909 Fest and we promoted the Temecula and Big Bear Film festivals.

In an effort to spread the word further about independent filmmaking and more specifically, the Independent Filmmakers of the Inland Empire, we are going to be putting out a publication.  This will serve a number of functions.

This publication will cover the latest in independent filmmaking.  I want to include articles related to filmmaking, local filmmaking activity and we will provide free ad space in this introductory issue for our sponsors.  There will be membership information.  I am planning a 10,000 copy run of this "magazine" which will be in a newsprint form, much like the Filmmakers Alliance publication.  I am modeling this after "the Blues News", a magazine that I ran in the past covering blues music in the Southern California region (and beyond).  I would like to feature our sponsors and speakers.  This will be distributed through out Southern California, particularly the Inland Empire region.

In addition to the above, you'd be joining the ranks of our additional sponsors:

DigiEffects, MovieMaker Magazine, Film School On Demand, Jag35.com, International Film School Sydney, NewBlueFX, Red Giant Software, Digital Video Magazine, Divergent Media Inc., ICG Magazine, Toolfarm, Filmmaker Magazine, P3 Update Magazine, New Media/Filmmaking Webinars, Videography Magazine, DV Creators, Artbeats, The Greenlight Coach, Imagine Products, Inc, ActionCutPrint.com, UltraStar Cinemas, Pro8mm, FilmTees.com, R.B.K. Patisserie & Gelatinery, RevoStock, Down & Dirty DV, Unlimited Stock Media, Intelligent Assistance, MacProVideo.com, Video Symphony, Big Bear Lake International Film Festival, video2brain, Blackmagic Design and ikan Corporation.  Which puts you in good company, I'd say. ;)

In the last month, I have also embarked on the IFotIE.com magnet campaign, where I put our very attractive logo magnets on the Starbucks bulletin boards all over So. Cal.  In addition to posting them, I use social media "check-ins" Gowalla and Facebook to leave a web photo "finger print" and URL for our website.

If you want to help our efforts, let me know.  You can email me at indie.film [at] ymail.com.

AVID Listens to editors... It must be true because I said so!

Last month I attended the Avid Media Composer: Committed to the Professional event.  Here Avid reiterated their commitment to editing pros.

At NAB 2011, in April, FCP wow'ed Apple fanboys with a sneak peek at FCP X during the FCPUG Network's Supermeet.  On the surface, it appeared like there were some great improvements but there were a lot of questions left to be answered.  Avid's response then was to have a fully manned booth ready to answer editor's questions and to offer a low, low crossgrade price.

Adobe also offered a low crossgrade price for their products.

In June, when FCP X was released, there were a lot more questions and disappointments.  There was a lot of backlash from the professional community.  There were some who liked it and saw it as the future.  It definitely needs a lot of work to reach the expectations of more than a few professional editors.

I would add myself to the list of disappointed users.  As I recently completed a class on Avid, I am interested in moving forward in that direction.  I will still use FCP 6 and 7 and may start to learn X in the future but for now, I'm concentrating my efforts, editing wise, toward Avid and Adobe NLEs.

At the Avid event, I was interviewed by Debra Kaufman.  The quote from me they wanted to use (given two different ways):

Avid's pick of a voice for student editors:
“I thought that FCP was taking over the market, but being involved with FCP for the last three years, I've noticed that Apple doesn't listen to editors and Avid does.” —Eric Harnden, Student Editor (from: http://apps.avid.com/Media-Composer-LA-Event/?intcmp=AV-HP-S2)

"I've always believed in Avid," said student editor Eric Harnden, who has been cutting indie films with Final Cut Pro. "I thought that FCP was taking over the market, but being involved with FCP for the last three years, I've noticed that Apple doesn't listen to editors and Avid does."
(from: http://library.creativecow.net/kaufman_debra/AVID-Event/1)

The Independent Filmmakers of the Inland Empire is an official Apple, Adobe, Avid and even Sony user group (among others).  As a group, we don't take sides, we are "NLE-agnostic".  There are users of each type of software in our group.  Nonetheless, we love bargains!

So I wanted to let you know that Avid has extended their crossgrade special until Sept. 30, 2011:
